EXCELLENT FUEL-SAVING TIPS FROM KEVIN GROVER BUICK GMC
Who doesn’t love saving some money at the pump? While gas prices have been the lowest they’ve been in quite some time, that doesn’t mean it will stay that way. When you are taking a proactive approach to improve your vehicle’s fuel efficiency, it does much more than putting money in your pocket. You can help keep your car running smoother for a longer time and be a help to the environment. Here at Kevin Gover Buick GMC, we’d like to share some great ways to improve gas mileage. You’ll be filling up less and driving more with these tips!
PURGE ALL THE UNNECESSARY ITEMS
If you’re treating your car as a storage unit, it’s going to cause you the need to fill up more. Start by searching through the back seats and either throw away or donate anything you don’t need. Then, tackle the trunk. We’ve probably all been guilty of throwing just about anything in the trunk of our car and forgetting about it. The more weight you have inside the vehicle, the less gas mileage you’ll get. It’s as simple as that.

FILL THOSE TIRES
Wait a second. Does low tire pressure mean you’ll sacrifice fuel efficiency too? Absolutely. It’s also dangerous as well. While it’s essential to keep them properly inflated, make sure you don’t overinflate either. You can find the recommended level of pressure usually on the inside of the driver’s side door or by referring to your owner’s manual. This useful tip will help keep your tires lasting longer as well!
DON’T SPEED
The correlation is known between higher speed intervals and gas consumption. After around 60 miles per hour, many vehicles start to lose their efficiency of how well they burn gas. Your best bet is to stick to the speed limit or slightly below. You’ll also cut down on any speeding tickets you may have gotten in the past!
PRACTICE GOOD DRIVING HABITS
Being a safe and responsible driver will also pay off at the pump. Here are a few suggestions to use when you’re driving:
Take your foot off the accelerator when you’re approaching a red light, coming to a stop sign, or getting off an exit
Don’t punch the gas when the light turns green
Use cruise control when you’re on the highway to maintain a safe and responsible speed
Use the recommended oil for your vehicle
REPLACE YOUR AIR FILTER WHEN NECESSARY
It is probably one of the easiest things you can do to improve gas mileage, but so many motorists are driving around with dirty air filters. Changing them regularly will help improve the efficiency of your engine. It’s common for air filters to be clogged with dirt and debris, and your car’s engine has to work much harder to retrieve air. Simply replacing an air filter can improve fuel efficiency by 10 to 15 percent.
MAKE ONE EXTENDED TRIP INSTEAD OF MULTIPLE ONES
It’s the trip to drop your kids off at soccer practice. Then, you get home, and your wife asks you to run to the grocery store. Next, you get back and need to go pick up dinner for the family. It never ends. You may think that those short, frequent trips are saving you money, but that’s far from the truth. We all have errands to do, but you can save yourself a considerable amount of fuel consumption by them all on a scheduled trip rather than spacing them throughout the day. Not only can you make it easier on yourself by planning your activities for the day, but you’ll be rewarded with some extra money in your pocket.
USE YOUR AIR CONDITIONING LESS IF POSSIBLE
Having a well-working AC in the middle of summer can be a godsend, but there are times when you don’t have to turn it full blast. If you’re cruising down the highway, it can be an excellent time to roll the windows down or if it’s nighttime. It’s not reasonable to go without air conditioning if it’s blistering hot out, but you can use judgment to put down the windows if the time presents itself.
KEEP YOUR VEHICLE MAINTAINED
Keeping up to date on oil changes, tire rotations, and other maintenance requirements will keep your car running better and more efficiently.
